Dev Days Expands with Two Events in 2025

We’re excited to reveal the dates for this year’s Dev Days – and to share that this event is expanding! This year, we will host Dev Days on two separate occasions due to demand – the first on May 15, and the second on September 25. Each of these will be a 24-hour virtual hackathon, designed to bring in new contributors to the Foundation’s open source projects with straightforward tasks that can be accomplished in one day. Sign up now to learn more about the project(s) of your choice, receive help from project leaders and maintainers, and prepare to write some code!

Developers of all experience levels are invited to join Dev Days, and participants may choose from any of the Academy Software Foundation’s 15 projects for their contributions, including MaterialX, OpenColorIO, and OpenEXR.

From the first Dev Days in 2023 to the second in 2024, we saw an almost two-fold increase in pull requests, and we plan to continue the momentum as we enter our third year of Dev Days! Bringing in new contributors is critical to success for open source projects – both for growing and maintaining each individual project, and for helping to streamline the overall Academy Software Foundation. For instance, contributors help by identifying and eliminating redundancies, and building templates and tools that can be reused across multiple projects.

“We’ve gotten valuable feedback from previous Dev Days participants, and we’re excited to continue making this event bigger and better as we kick off year three,” explained Carol Payne, Dev Days Lead and OpenColorIO project chair. “It’s been particularly gratifying to hear from senior engineers that they had been interested in getting involved in open source, and having an official event like this made it much easier for them to find an entry point and commit to contributing.”

“This was my first time contributing both to open source projects and Dev Days for ASWF. It went really well, and what I enjoyed was that everyone during the Dev Days had the same goal: contribute to open source. Being able to get dedicated help from mentors during this time made it easier to jump in. There are also plenty of easy tasks and issues anyone can pick up. I would definitely encourage others to participate in Dev Days!” shared Dharshan Vishwanatha, Software Engineer at Netflix Animation Studios.
