Academy Software Foundation Adopts OpenAPV as a Hosted Project, Led by New Premier Member Samsung Electronics

OpenAPV is a royalty-free, open source video codec providing professional-grade video capturing and post-production capabilities for mobile devices and cloud-based tools

Los Angeles, CA (October 31, 2024) – The Academy Software Foundation, the motion picture industry’s premier organization for advancing open source software development, today announced OpenAPV as its newest sandbox project and Samsung Electronics as a new Premier Member.

The improvement in smartphone camera performance has led to an ecosystem of content creators who want access to professional-grade video recording and post-production editing capabilities on their mobile devices. Traditional codecs are not suitable for professional use as they have been designed for lossy compression of video for mass distribution.

To meet this growing demand, Samsung Electronics unveiled the APV codec in 2023, which provides perceptually lossless video quality and consumes 20% less storage compared to existing formats. Hosted at the Academy Software Foundation and led by Samsung Electronics, OpenAPV will provide a royalty-free, open source reference implementation of the APV codec, enabling professional-grade video recording and post-production without quality degradation.

“We believe in the power of collaboration, and we’ve seen the Academy Software Foundation’s great achievements in making open source software more accessible for the entire content creation industry,” said Kwang Pyo Choi, Samsung Research, Samsung Electronics. “We are excited to contribute to the Foundation and look forward to working with the other members to better support the professional content creators who use your products.”

Samsung has fostered a deep commitment to open source, advancing technological innovation through proactive and open collaboration with developers all over the world. The company has already released or contributed to 110 various open source projects, and counting.

“Samsung’s longstanding commitment to open source has been a model for companies in many industries, spanning both hardware and software development,” shared David Morin, Executive Director of the Academy Software Foundation. “We are very excited that Samsung Electronics has joined the Foundation and is contributing the APV source code to create OpenAPV. We hope that many developers will join and participate in its development.”

The Academy Software Foundation welcomes new members to support its mission of fostering a healthy open source ecosystem. To learn about more about becoming a member, visit https://www.aswf.io/join/
